Thomas A. Close, CPA/Berkeley Data Processing
Close Tax Service, a seasonal business, started in January 1975 with Tom and one part-time assistant.
The name was changed to Berkeley Data Processing, Inc. in 1980 and service was expanded to include payroll preparation and small business tax and accounting service. New partner, James Dell, was added to the staff and it became a year round business, with the office located on Independence Street.
In September 1985, Brenda Close, a part time assistant, was added to staff and the office moved to 1680 Valley Road. In 1988, Tom became a CPA and Brenda a full time assistant with a second full time accountant added to the business in 1990.
Upon their college graduation, Tom's sons, Matthew and Bradley, joined the business in 1998 and 2003, respectively. The additions expanded the accounting staff to four full time accountants. In 2007, Brad passed the Uniform CPA exam.
With the rapid growth in business, a larger office space was required. In conjunction with Tom's twin brother Tim's insurance business, Tom moved his CPA practice into a new office building next to the current office on Valley Road . The new building was christened "The Gemini Centre" (Gemini meaning twins) on January 1, 2000.
Upon the certification of Matthew and Bradley, the firm changed the name to incorporate all three. The Firm is now known as BTM (Bradley, Thomas, & Matthew) Certified Public Accountants.
In the Spring of 2008, the Firm expanded into the Berkeley County market and opened an office in the north end of Martinsburg, WV in the Pharmacy Center shopping complex near the new Wal-Mart.
Current staffing includes three CPAs, one enrolled agent, two full time accountants, a full time administrative assistant, and two part time tax season assistants.
